The Future of AI in School Psychology?
Imagine a world where every student, parent, teacher, and school psychologist has personalized support at their fingertips. A world where artificial intelligence (AI) provides school psychologists with actionable insights and helps identify at-risk students before their challenges escalate. This isn’t a distant dream—it's the reality we're rapidly approaching.
AI is Already Enhancing Our Ability to Support Students
Recent survey data we collected from 199 practitioners suggests that approximately 65% of school psychologists have used AI in some form, such as generating parts of psychoeducational reports . We will publish these data soon!
AI is reducing the time spent on clerical tasks like report writing, allowing us to focus on what matters most: engaging directly with students and providing impactful interventions.
The Future of School Psychology
AI Agents for Workflow Automation: AI agents will assist school psychologists by automating workflow processes, such as scheduling meetings, sending reminders, and managing documentation. This automation will free up more time for duties that require direct human interaction.
Virtual Assistants for On-Demand Support: AI agents, such as virtual assistants or chatbots, will provide on-demand support for students, parents, and teachers—answering routine questions, offering coping strategies, or supplementing psychoeducational support.
Balancing Efficiency and Human Connection: AI will help us strike a balance between efficiency and human connection in our practice. Reducing administrative burdens means more time for student engagement, teacher consultation, and intervention planning.
Shifting Focus from Paperwork to Student Support: By minimizing paperwork, we will shift our focus to direct student support, teacher collaboration, and relationship building.
Enhanced Early Detection: AI will enhance our ability to detect at-risk students early through proactive alerts based on academic or behavioral changes, enabling faster, more targeted interventions.
A Caveat
The future of AI in school psychology is evolving, and these ideas may shift as technology and ethical considerations progress. While this vision is exciting, it's important to acknowledge that no one has a crystal ball - That said, I would bet dollars to donuts that our practice will look significantly different in the next 5-10 years.
